The Solar PV Project - 2019-22

In the heart of Costa Rica's rainforest, the indigenous community of Cerro Azul has lived without electricity for 75 years. Located 35 km into the jungle, this remote settlement of about 200 people faces significant challenges, including extreme poverty and limited access to modern amenities. Parents often work long hours on distant plantations for meager wages, while children as young as five walk hours alone to attend school.

The lack of electricity has severely hindered educational opportunities for Cerro Azul's youth, making it difficult for them to keep pace with modern education and technology. This disadvantage becomes particularly apparent when older students attempt to continue their education in urban areas, only to struggle with basic electronic tasks.

In response to these challenges, Winds of Change partnered with RJI to implement a Solar PV System for the community's school and center. Despite delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the project was successfully completed in November 2022, thanks to generous donations from the Compassionate Eye Foundation and private donors. The installation of a 10 kW Solar PV system now provides power for all classroom needs, including computers, projectors, electronic devices, lighting, and satellite internet. Additionally, the system powers a donated refrigerator, allowing the community to store food and create frozen treats.

This sustainable energy solution marks a significant step forward for Cerro Azul, offering new opportunities for education, connectivity, and improved quality of life for its residents. The project demonstrates the transformative power of renewable energy in remote, underserved communities.
