El Comedor Project Rehabilitation
The dining hall directly benefits 220 primary school students aged 5 to 13 and supports around 200 families. These families live and work by collecting recyclable food and garbage from La Chureca, a huge dump in Managua, and many live in shelters made of plastic, old metal, or wood that they find in the rubbish. Most of their children only eat once daily, provided at "El Comedor". Thanks to our amazing donors, this wonderful program serves a daily plate of food for the kids (mainly rice and beans).
On our most recent trip to Nicaragua to install the solar PV system, we saw the community centre was in great need of repairs and upkeep, which is so valuable to many young children.
Mothers help cook daily to put food on the table, but we spend a lot of money on electricity bills, gas, and wood to cook. The kids go to elementary and high schools during the day, but many have to work with their families sifting through the rubbish.
El comedor:
Provides a safety net for hungry children.
Provides “Our children’s ability to grow, learn, and meet their full potential”” depends on regular access to healthy meals.
Provides Training and Workshops to encourage children and families to grow.
Improves the overall quality of life for all.
We are happy to report that as of today, the rehabilitation is complete, and many more smiling faces are filling the space.
Approx budget = $1500 USD
