Hogar CNF - Solar Water Heater (2024-25)
Project Background:
Hogar CNF is managed by a legally registered civil association, with which we have collaborated since 2008. This association supports 50 children and youth, ranging from 8 months to 16 years old, on a permanent basis and provides meals for 75 impoverished local children - totalling 125 individuals. CNF relies on donations and is supported by just two volunteer indigenous nuns and one local priest responsible for collecting daily donations.
For over three years, CNF has struggled with inadequate running water. Initially, water was available for only one or two hours daily. Over the past nine months, the situation has deteriorated, with only a small trickle arriving once a day, barely enough to fill a couple of buckets. Consequently, CNF must purchase water to meet the needs of the children and maintain operations at the orphanage; they require a minimum of 140,000 liters of water monthly but currently receive only 70,000 liters. The cost for 140,000 liters is $539.28 USD ($38.52 USD per 10,000 liters).
It is impossible to cover the total cost of the required monthly water supply because heating water for bathing costs $9,000 MXN ($526.07 USD) monthly. A solar water heater would save this expense, enabling CNF to purchase sufficient water to ensure proper functioning and the wellbeing of the children.
The lack of water has compromised the children's health, leading to increased rates of diarrheal diseases, eye infections, and other illnesses, including mental health issues. The appearance of being unclean has made the children self-conscious and insecure at school, further affecting their self-esteem, especially since they are easily identified as orphaned children. This has caused their grades to drop and their reluctance to attend school to increase.
Project Description:
This project has two interconnected objectives to enhance our operations and extend our resources. The primary goal is the installation of a solar water heater, which will reduce our reliance on gas for heating water. This change will enable the children and youth to take daily hot showers, allow the poor local children to continue receiving free meals, and ease the burden on staff responsible for cleaning and meal preparation. Achieving this goal will also ensure the continuation of our noble efforts to support those most in need. As a secondary, optional objective, we aim to implement a photovoltaic system that converts our electric water pump to solar power. This adjustment will maintain the functionality of our water tank and significantly reduce our electricity expenses.
Help us realize our goal by generously donating to help.
Expected Implementation - Spring 2025
